A monument for Europe

In a few years time, the European area will get a quite different skyline. Grey office buildings will make way for modern architecture. No superhighway cutting through the city, but a welcoming residential area in the Wetstraat.

The European institutions are very important for Brussels, but we are not proud of the way this neighbourhood looks like. That’s why the government of the Brussels Region has a approved a plan that has to bring more housing, better transport links, and rethinking public space.

Some plans also have a monument or symbol in mind for the European Union. What could this monument look like ? A skyscraper on a Dubai-like scale, or a gigantic piece of art ?

this city sucks with its inhabitants, its traffic and its food offer. for the weather it is innocent

No white elephants please. It would be better to have inspirational architecture for a functional building such as an EU information centre, transport hub or concert hall. Our own Sydney Opera House or Guggenheim.

I agree with Frances, please do not let any modern artist create some bizarre objects that will not be understood by anyone and will not fit in any of the neighbourhoods here… if a symbol, then plant a tree for example (and make sure it survives), there should be anyway more green in the concrete jungle on arts loi and area.

I agree with Frances also. The age of triumphant symbols has past because to triumph someone has to fall. Europe is about it’s people first and foremost, so the symbol should be something the people can use to interact with each other, a social space where the adults and children of this multicultural city can mix.

Imagine a native for any jungle, recently new on science, history, and in one new world,BIG CITIES,what do you think he will have on mind if you say,Paris,Rio,or NYC? like a child or like a foreigner, when something is NEW,it will be easy to remember it if you have an ICON that let you make a relation, like a language student, begins with images,Paris Tower,Corcovado`s Christ,or Mrs Freedom had won a place on our brains. If you want to say something like We are here! dont doubt,it will begin with stone or steel, like piramyds, because nice art paints, little sculptures,or little jewels can be stolen or broken, but your great good feeling,NEVER.Kisses.
